Makali’i
Friday, May 22nd, 2009Wow! Coming home from town this evening and I spotted a fishing boat pulling something dark. I thought, “Oooo they are like Captain Jim pulling the black pirate ship in Look out for Pirates” but then I noticed the odd shape of the vessel being pulled and I suddenly knew what it was. I pulled over with the family to a clearing near the shore and pulled out a spyglass I keep in the door of the truck. Sure enough, it was exactly what I thought:
A voyaging canoe. The Makali’i to be exact. At least that’s my assessment after looking a pics afterward. At first I thought it was the Hawai’iloa since I remembered that the bow and stern had ben reversed on that vessel after it didn’t sail well. And this canoe had what looked like a higher stern than bow. So, you know, maybe. But the single mast ruled out Hawai’iloa pretty quick. Plus this canoe had a substantial deck, well above the water line. So, after consulting some pics, I think it was Makali’i.
